Short Description

The course offers students the chance to gain hands-on experience in planning and executing a research project with an industry partner. By applying the knowledge acquired from the programmes, students create innovative solutions for a real-world challenge while expanding their professional network, communication abilities, and industry expertise. Throughout the process, students receive guidance from an academic supervisor and a company mentor, supported by a mix of online and in-person sessions.

Timetable

The course has 8 x 2 hour workshops, and approximately 20 hours of asynchronous material such as pre-recorded lectures followed by a task.

 

5 meetings with the allocated dissertation supervisor and company mentor.

 

The taught component takes place in Semester 2. The completion of the project portfolio and the 5 face-to-face supervision meetings are typically carried out during the summer months, between June and September.

Course Aims

The course aims to provide students with practical experience in planning, implementing, and communicating a self-directed, industry-engaged project in the financial sector.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

1. Integrate and apply financial theories and concepts to address a practical industry challenge.

 

2. Critically evaluate financial data, methodologies, and industry practices to develop a well-supported argument or solution.

 

3. Exhibit effective project management skills, including planning, executing, and delivering a comprehensive industry-focused dissertation within specified timelines.

 

4. Create concise and professional written reports and presentations that effectively communicate complex financial ideas and findings to both academic and industry audiences.

 

5. Engage constructively with industry professionals, incorporating their feedback and insights to enhance the relevance and quality of the dissertation.

 

6. Conduct independent, original research that contributes to the understanding of a specific issue within the financial industry, demonstrating initiative and critical thinking.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components of the course's summative assessment.
