Independent External Review (Scottish Public Services Ombudsman - SPSO)

The Scottish Public Services Ombudsman (SPSO) is the final stage for complaints about all public services in Scotland. Complainants who remain dissatisfied with the University after completion of the complaints process (i.e. after conclusion of Stage 2) can ask the SPSO to look at the complaint. The SPSO looks at issues such as service failure and maladministration (administrative fault) as well as the way the University has handled the complaint.

The SPSO cannot normally look at complaints:

  • which have not been all the way through the university’s complaints handling procedure
  • more than 12 months after the complainant became aware of the matter complained about, or
  • that have been or are being considered in court.
