Kaltura

Kaltura is a video platform that allows you to create new videos using an in-built screen and webcam recorder, and existing videos can also be uploaded to it. It can be accessed and videos shared from within Moodle.

Videos can be edited and enhanced in the following ways:

  • Trimming and clipping
  • Splitting videos into 'Chapters' that enable viewers to jump to specfic parts of the video
  • Adding clickable 'hotspots' to link to webpages or other parts of the same video
  • Interactive quizzes to improve viewer engagement
  • Enabling viewer comments and note-taking

You can monitor how many views each video is getting, and which areas of your content are getting the most engagement.

More information is available via the Learning Innovation Support Unit, the UofG website, and Kaltura Learning

Copy Zoom video to Kaltura

This video shows how to download a recorded video and its transcript from Zoom, and upload it to Kaltura.

Please note the following two known issues:

  • The subtitles remain synchronised when transferred to Kaltura, but more text appears at the same time - i.e. the sentences at the bottom of the screen are longer and remain on the screen for longer.
  • If slide decks or single slides are added to the Timeline in Kaltura, these may result in captioning being obscured and difficulties with switching between views. Therefore, it is not recommended to add this type of content to a video that was taken from Zoom and uploaded to Kaltura.

Embed a Kaltura Video in Moodle Text and Media Area

The document below will show you how to embed a Kaltura video in a Moodle Text and Media Area. It also shows how to remove the Annoto functionality.

When is this relevant?

Kaltura is the University’s recommended video hosting platform. You can upload videos to Kaltura and share them in one or more Moodle courses. When you embed them, the video appears immediately on the front page of the course, making it easier for students to access it.
The Annoto feature allows students to leave comments on videos and engage in conversations, as well as to make personal notes. You can remove this if it is not relevant for your course.

The steps are:

  1. Download the Kaltura app (you only need to do this the first time you use it)
  2. Record your screen and/or your camera
  3. Upload the video to the My Media Kaltura platform in Moodle
