‘What Data Means to You?’ is a short film project exploring public imaginings and lived realities of data futures. The ESRC Impact Acceleration Account Grant-funded project, led by Dr. Mark Wong (School of Social & Political Science) and Dr. Inge Sorensen (School of Culture & Creative Arts), produced the short film to illustrate the public’s perspectives on what data means in people’s lives from diverse voices in the community.

This fantastic film was premiered at the ‘SHAPE of DATA - Innovating with Data in Scotland: multi-sector and multidisciplinary approaches to support social equality, wellbeing, and participation’ event in October, which was organised by Bridgette Wessels from the Digital Society & Economy IRT, the University of Edinburgh and Policy Scotland.

This event was part of the wider series of SHAPE, Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts for People and the Economy, which seeks to showcase the value of the social sciences, humanities and arts. The event attracted speakers from across the art and humanities, social sciences and data and computing sciences to address the challenge of how to use data in socially progressive ways for social, community and individual wellbeing,  The three round table discussions produced a policy briefing paper to be published by Policy Scotland, and this with the film 'What Data Means to You?' identifies the challenges in how to develop inclusive community-led innovations with data.  The interest in the topic has attracted the possibility of seedcorn funding and a follow-on workshop is planned to develop research on inclusive data-driven innovation for social good.
