Urban Informal Economies in Peacebuilding
Urban Informal Economies in Peacebuilding
Most of the urban poor in the Global South rely on informal economic activities for their income. However, this sector has been largely neglected in conflict and post conflict debates. This article uses three different theoretical perspectives to explore the role of informal economies in peacebuilding. The findings conclude that those in informality must have a voice in post conflict governance structures and be able to advocate for their interests. Furthermore, opportunities to participate in the formal sector should be coupled with the provision of labour rights and social protection. These are key preconditions for inclusive post conflict development.
