Virtual reality (VR) and Augmented reality (AR) is a fast-growing field, with VR estimated to be worth $9.5 Billion by 2022. However, interaction with virtual and mixed reality content remains a challenge. Logitech, in collaboration with the University of Glasgow, have been exploring the use of a familiar form factor, the pen, to enhance our capability to perform sketching, writing and markup in VR. Logitech Ink is a 6 Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) tracked pen peripheral for use in VR. This project helped Logitech to assess the functionality and accuracy of Logitech Ink prototypes on its journey to market.
The IAA provided research assistant (RA) Dr Mark McGill funds to visit the Logitech design centre, interact with the design and development teams, leading to the development of the ‘Spatial accuracy benchmarking toolkit’ which was very valuable on the journey to bringing the Logitech VR Ink to the market.

Dr Mark McGill is a now Research Fellow within Professor Stephen Brewster's group, and is part of ViAjeRo, a recently awarded €2.4M European Research Council's Advanced Grant initiative exploring the future of mixed reality passenger experiences. He works within the Glasgow Interactive SysTems (GIST) within the School of Computing Science, and has 15 publications and 2 Best Paper awards.
Outcomes of this project have beneficial effects for early year career researchers involved, including publications and the further development of relationships with industrial collaborators. The relationship with Logitech has allowed for collaboration with further Logitech designs and prototypes, and has allowed an insight into the future of mixed reality technologies, helping place both the RA and the research group at the forefront of the industry.
