Gethin Norman - researcher, senior lecturer and School of Computing Science EDI committee co-lead

I’m Gethin Norman, a Senior Lecturer at the School of Computing Science and the Co-Lead of the School's EDI committee. I am also the Deputy Head of School and Head of Honours. I am also a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford working on the FUN2MODEL: From FUNction-based TO MOdel-based automated probabilistic reasoning for DEep Learning research project. I obtained a degree in mathematics from the University of Oxford and a PhD in computer science from the University of Birmingham.

I have been the EDI co-lead for just under a year now and in this role I have been asked to coordinate the School's Athena Swan Silver Application which will be due in under two years. As there has been significant growth in staff and student numbers during and since the pandemic, one of the committee's main goals since taking over as co-lead has been to enhance the culture and community within the School across both staff and students. This has included increasing the number of events through developing a School EDI calendar.

Previously, I successfully led the development of the School's work allocation model for academic staff and I am now the work allocation model coordinator. I am currently extending this model to allow the School to monitor equality and diversity issues, for example, to include data on both the gender balance within the School and in the allocation of work and also extending the model to allow greater flexibility in people's work allocation.
