The COSE upstander initiative

In line with the COSE Equality, Diversity and Inclusions (EDI) committee's ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of support and accountability, we are excited to introduce our latest college-wide initiative: upstander training. Rooted in discussions centered on empowering individuals and cultivating dialogues around workplace and study culture, this initiative represents a pivotal step ahead for COSE, with the aim to implement upstander training across units and schools in 2024.

An upstander is anyone who witnesses a behaviour that could lead to something high risk or harmful and makes a choice to intervene.

To ensure that the training is tailored to the distinct needs of each school and unit, our EDI committee members participated in training sessions facilitated by the Organisational Development team. Their feedback is instrumental in shaping this initiative to be effective and uniquely suited to our community and embodies our commitment to proactive change.

What to expect?

Each Upstander Training session will prioritise creating a safe and inclusive space by fostering open dialogue, respectful participation, and focusing on case studies to facilitate meaningful discussions and learning experiences.

The content of our Upstander Training is designed to empower individuals to become active agents of change within our community. Participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of the roles of bystanders and upstanders, along with the importance of taking action.
  • Exchange ideas and strategies for becoming active upstanders in various situations.
  • Reflect on actionable steps they can take to make a positive difference.

Key to our Upstander Training are the "5 Ds":

1. Direct: Using words or actions to stop harmful behaviour.
2. Distract: Interrupting the interaction to diffuse tension.
3. Delegate: Asking others for assistance in addressing the situation.
4. Delay: Checking in after the interaction to ensure resolution.
5. Document: Keeping a record of observed behaviour for accountability purposes.

By working through a range of scenarios, participants will develop practical skills and reflect on how to apply the "5 Ds" effectively in real-life situations.

As we launch this initiative, we are excited about the positive impact it could have on our community. We believe that, together, we can make a difference.
