Nestled in the heart of East Kilbride, the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC) often seems like a world of its own, far removed from the bustling main campus. However, for me, being the technical representative on SUERC’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) committee has proven to be a practical and fulfilling way to stay connected with the larger university community.

In recent years, SUERC has embarked on a journey to enhance its physical environment, spurred by the insights gained from several staff surveys. These surveys highlighted significant challenges in SUERC's existing infrastructure, prompting a collective call for change. As someone passionate about accessibility, I was entrusted with the responsibility of leading a small team (Rona McGill, Andrew Tait & Terrence Donnelly) to review physical access at SUERC. We embarked on a preliminary evaluation of the existing infrastructure, identifying key areas that needed attention and presented our findings to SUERC EDI.  Staff Voice groups, SUERC Endometriosis champions and SUERC Mental Health First Aiders were consulted and then the findings were presented to senior management.

One of the most inspiring aspects of this initiative was witnessing the collaborative spirit that emerged. It was a testament to the power of collective action and the unwavering staff commitment to a more inclusive SUERC. Combined efforts by SUERC staff have made a positive impact on SUERC with plans for improved accessibility with endometriosis-friendly toilets, hearing loops and a much-anticipated welfare room.

The journey I’ve outlined to help enhance accessibility at SUERC stands as a testament to the power of dedicated staff from across SUERC working toward a common goal. It reaffirms the belief that inclusivity is not just a buzzword, but a living, breathing principle that can be woven into the fabric of any workplace. it's a promise for a more inclusive future at SUERC.
