How do we play Let’s Talk About…?

The Let's Talk About... team recommends four different ways of playing, and it’s completely up to you how you choose to use these cards. Let's Talk About... can easily be modified for different situations, timeframes, and numbers of participants – it is entirely up to you how you use it.

Let's Talk About... is split into five suits, Information & Values, Expectations, Career, Social, and Wildcard.

In-depth guide

Starting off easy…

Each suit has been designed to be used independently, or as part of the whole deck. Simply pull out the suit you want from a shuffled deck to utilise one suit in a specific situation. We recommend using the expectations suit at the beginning of a new research partnership, and the social and careers suits for group settings and networking opportunities. Wildcards can make an appearance whenever you’d like.

A note on expectations…

The expectations suit has been specifically developed for use at the beginning of new research partnerships, like a new student joining a research group or at the beginning of a new collaboration.

Pull an expectation card and discuss what works best for both of you! There’s no time limit on how long you need to spend on a card. Some groups found taking notes about conversation outcomes is useful to help solidify shared expectations.

As a group…

Research doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and neither should conversations. Pick someone to act as the question-asker. The asker can shuffle the deck and pick a card at random, and go around the group and allow each participant to share their experiences. Skip a card if you don’t think it’s relevant!

Adding values

If you want to take Let’s Talk About… up a notch, draw a ‘Values’ card after each conversation. Consider how your conversation reflects the University’s values and how you can apply these throughout your day.
