Knowledge and Creativity 2022-23

A JOINT TEACHING INITIATIVE: COLLEGE OF ARTS, COLLEGE OF MEDICAL, VETERINARY AND LIFE SCIENCES.

summary

At its best, research is a creative process, whether in the Arts or the Sciences. We are running an extra-curricular forum for students from disciplines within our two colleges to explore the fundamental nature of research. What is its history and development? How is research practice similar and different in the various academic domains?

rationale

Teaching undergraduates tends to focus on supplying them with a thorough academic background to their discipline. But a high-quality undergraduate degree may not indicate aptitude for creative research. Indeed, many researchers, even to post-doctoral level, probably never really think about the fundamentals of what they are doing, its essentially creative nature, and the similarities in intellectual processes across the disciplines. We will engage a cohort of Arts and MVLS students in starting to think about, and discuss, the nature of creativity in research, the fundamental nature of knowledge, and other issues that will inform their understanding of the dynamic and creative processes that underpin successful research careers.

structure and programme of events

The programme of events will run in the early evening, with 3 × 90-minute sessions per semester. Sessions will be run in the ARC and will start at 18.30 with catering provided from 18.00.
