PPIe

Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIe) emerged from a rights-based perspective – that is, to ensure that all parties involved in the research process are heard, where research is carried out ‘with’ or ‘by’ members of the public, rather than ‘about’, ‘for’, or ‘to’ them. PPIe has become an important factor in allowing research to have a meaningful societal impact across a wide range of cultural contexts and diverse communities, with many funding bodies requiring research proposals to account for the ways members of the public will be both involved and engaged with the research.

In this workshop, you will develop skills in involving and engaging public and patients in research. The need to involve patients and members of the public in research is paramount to ensure we are asking questions relevant to patients lives and conducting research in a way that is meaningful, inclusive, and respectful. Using case scenarios, you will discuss and participate in professionally based sessions with PPIe representatives.  This approach will also facilitate skills in involvement and engagement techniques, and you will be supported in identifying those transferable skills that you can use in the delivery of community activities that have a societal impact.  The workshop aims to consolidate and extend your knowledge of PPIe and demonstrate easy and effective ways to incorporate underlying PPIe principles in their own research.

 On successful completion of this workshop, you will be able to:

  1. Understand and explain what public and patient involvement and engagement (PPIe) is, and how it relates to academic work.
  2. Outline and appraise the different roles involved in the PPIe process.
  3. Critically evaluate the facilitators and barriers to successfully embedding PPIe within research.
  4. Produce a clear outline of the role of PPIe will take within your proposed Masters’ research project.

This workshop will be delivered in two parts:

  • A 30-minute lecture orientating you to the basic principles of PPIe, to be watched prior to the workshop;
  • A 3-hour ‘live’ workshop (including breaks) allowing you to meet the College of Medicine, Veterinary, and Life Science’s PPIe team, and work collaboratively with your peers to explore real life scenarios. The workshop will be delivered online via Zoom or MS Teams (TBC).

You will be provided with downloadable resources that will aid your knowledge, understanding, and development in this area.
