MVLS Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) Support
Our support combines access to lay perspectives on information content, study methods and research findings with links to online resources that explain the basics of PPIE. You can apply your understanding of the involvement of patient and public in research to your own research proposals.
MVLS PPIE Steering Group
The MVLS Public and Patient Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) Steering group can provide a valuable lay perspective on projects for staff and students from the NHS and across University of Glasgow.
Since 2020, the MVLS PPIE steering group provided advice for 30 research proposals and was co-applicant on over £5m of successfully funded studies.
Basics of PPIE
Online Introduction to PPIE
This Patient Video is produced by the Centre for BME Health at the University of Leicester and is about involving people from ethnic minority groups in your research.
What is health research? This course offers the chance to explore the world of health research and the role volunteers play in transforming treatments and improving health care.
The NIHR Public Contributor Online Course is an interactive course from NIHR for new and experienced reviewers of health and social care research. it may also be useful for researchers, research managers and funders who want to understand what makes good patient and public involvement and the public perspective.

Ethics and Data Protection
There is no requirement for ethical approval if you are doing a straight forward PPIE activity such as commenting on research design and/or patient leaflets. If you have focus groups to ask people about their experiences, please contact MVLS College Ethics Committee to check whether you need ethical approval.
If you are collecting information about lay members such as contact details, socioeconomic status, etc then you would need to prepare a privacy notice to be signed by the lay member. Guidance on privacy statements is available from the University of Glasgow Data Protection Office
