Incidence and outcomes of COPD/asthma
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including asthma, is a global healthcare challenge. Patients with COPD commonly have co-existing long-term conditions, notably cardiovascular disease, heart failure and diabetes mellitus.
In this research, we will study the epidemiology of COPD in the NHSGGC population, including examining trends in incidence, mortality and case-fatality. Further, it will measure the association between treatment/prescription options and epidemiological outcomes and assess the cardiovascular disease complications of COPD exacerbation. Analyses will allow for modelling of subgroups, including patients with possible/definite COPD, COPD disease code (e.g., emphysema), age, sex, urban/rural and SIMD (Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation).
