This year’s Living Laboratory Open Door Day gave senior pupils from local high schools a unique opportunity to explore Govan-based careers in healthcare innovation and precision medicine.
Hosted at the Teaching & Learning Centre and the Imaging Centre of Excellence (ICE) at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, pupils were able to step into the roles of healthcare professionals through hands-on, interactive activities. The simulation lab saw them delve into patient care by analysing symptoms and recording vital signs to work towards a diagnosis. Meanwhile, the teaching lab introduced them to genome and blood analysis through a DNA sequencing and blood typing simulations exercise, offering valuable insights into the laboratory techniques that underpin precision medicine.
The pupils also toured ICE’s cutting-edge facilities, where they learned about the principles and capabilities of 7T MRI scanning. A highlight of the visit was a hands-on exploration of the MR CoilTech radiofrequency (RF) head coil, offering a closer look at its structure and function.
Additionally, the day featured speed networking sessions with professionals from the Living Laboratory ecosystem, giving pupils the chance to hear firsthand about a wide range of STEM careers and the personal journeys that led to them. These conversations aimed to inspire students while connecting them with existing learning and skills development pathways to help turn their aspirations into reality.
The Living Laboratory Open Door Day complemented our STEM Futures in Precision Medicine programme, which is currently being delivered in partnership with the Glasgow Science Centre. By highlighting the diverse range of careers available through various STEM pathways within the Govan area, this initiative seeks to inspire local young people to envision themselves as part of the future of healthcare.
The day was delivered with support from our partners, including STEM Ambassadors Scotland, Canon Medical Research Europe, Siemens Healthineers, Professor David Porter, University of Glasgow College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences, West of Scotland Innovation Hub, MR CoilTech, and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
