Introduction

This information will help you complete your enrolment for session 2024-2025.

The deadline for completing enrolment is 29 September 2024; however, after you have completed Academic Registration, it is very important to complete enrolment as soon as possible as you will have greater choice and flexibility with your timetable.

Spaces on courses fill up fast and the longer you leave enrolment the less choice you will have. You should start by enrolling on your compulsory courses and then choose your optional courses which fit your online timetable.

As a full-time student, you must enrol on 120 credits. You are advised to do this with 60 credits in semester 1 and 60 credits in semester 2, as this will balance your study and examination commitments across the session. It is not recommended to enrol on more than 120 credits; if you choose to do this we will contact you to discuss your choices.

Completing Enrolment

Follow the instructions on our Registry pages to begin enrolment: Registry: Enrolment.

Level 1

Information regarding compulsory recommended and other courses is available via MyRequirements. You must enrol on your full 120 credits as soon as possible but certainly no later than 29 September 2024.

There is some opportunity to revisit course choice in January, but your full 120 credit enrolment must be completed at the start of your academic year.

You must enrol via MyRequirements to ensure you meet the rules of your Programme and Plan; if you do not meet these you may not be able to progress to the next year of your studies.

The Life Sciences Enrolment Team will check you have a sensible curriculum.

Compulsory Courses

Important: For Biology 1A and 1B, you must enrol on your lab first, and then you will be auto-enrolled onto your lecture.

Below is a short summary of the compulsory courses you must take:

  • You must enrol on 80 credits of compulsory courses.
  • You must enrol on Biology 1A (20 credits) and 1B (20 credits).
  • You must enrol on Chemistry (40 credits) or Science Fundamentals 1X (20 credits) and 1Y (20 credits)

How to decide if you are required to choose Chemistry or Science Fundamentals

If you have a Chemistry Higher (Grade B), you must enrol on Chemistry 1.

If you have attained Grade B or equivalent and are having difficulty enrolling on Chemistry, please create an Online Help Request, stating that you need to be added to a Student Group.

If you have not reached this level in Chemistry, you must enrol on Science Fundamentals 1X and 1Y.

However, if you are enrolled on a Biochemistry plan, you must enrol on Chemistry and should not enrol on Science Fundamentals.

Optional Courses

Your remaining 40 credits should be chosen to fit your timetable.

You can choose from an extensive list covering other areas of science, geography, arts, or language. Make sure you are eligible and that your choice fits your timetable.

Think about it then look at the available list of courses and follow the instructions on our Registry pages to begin enrolment: Registry: Enrolment.

Level 2 | Direct Entrants

Full-time students must take 120 credits of courses, and at least of those credits must be in Level-2 Life Sciences courses (course codes: BIOL 2039-2044).

Most students take all 120 credits in Level-2 courses, but you can also choose to continue with Level-2 Chemistry or Level-2 Psychology, for example.

Note that unlike Level-1, there is no requirement to take Level-2 courses in other subjects (e.g. Chemistry).

You must choose a combination of Level-2 courses that will qualify you for entry to programmes in two Life Sciences degree groups or one Life Sciences Degree and a programme offered by another college.

The information for Level-1 students booklet helps you choose the Level-2 courses that best suit your interests and that fit best with your likely degree subject.

Tip: If you are unsure what courses you should choose, please contact your Adviser of Studies.

Many courses offer more than one lecture and/or lab time slot; at enrolment, you can select from the available time slots (remember to use the ‘view all’ function in order that you can see all the available choices.

Whenever possible, we allow students a free choice of times for lectures and labs; however, for some course combinations, only set lab/lecture times will work to prevent timetable clashes (see tips below on which sessions to select).

To allow as many students onto the Year 2 Life Sciences courses as possible, we may, occasionally, have to move some students to a different time slot if their timetable permits this; this will be on a last-in, first-moved basis.

If you wish Wednesday afternoon free for sports, you should sign up as soon as possible to avoid teaching sessions scheduled for this time.

Lectures

Each subject normally has between three and five one-hour lectures per week. If you have consecutive lectures, this allows you 10 minutes to get to your next lecture, which may be in a different building.

Attendance at all lectures is expected - recordings may not always be available.

Laboratories

You can expect to participate in several practical class each semester for most subjects.

If you can enrol on morning labs, please do so. Some students do not have a choice (due to timetable clashes at other times) and must enrol on afternoon labs. Enrolling on morning labs leaves space for these students.

Workshops

As an alternative (or in addition) to laboratories, some subjects require attendance at workshops or tutorials, which normally last one hour. These will be shown on your timetable.

Further generic enrolment information is available on the Registry page.
