The MVLS Graduate Skills Award
About the award
The Graduate Skills Award is the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences' personal development and skills programme and is open to all MVLS PGT students. It provides a framework for postgraduate students to gain formal recognition for extra-curricular activities undertaken during their time at Glasgow.
The award provides students with the opportunity to develop the skills needed to succeed in the workplace through a range of lectures and a series of workshops. It is an excellent way to become part of our thriving PGT community and helps students to enhance personal and professional skills and prepare for future success.
What does it involve?
You will be required to complete a range of activities that fall under our three pillars; Passionate, Professional, Progressive.
There are two levels of award: Graduate Skills Award and Graduate Skills Award Plus. Both awards follow the same structure, the main difference is the number of activities you need to complete. The GSA consists of four activities (one from each pillar plus a fourth of your choice) whilst the GSA Plus consists of six (three from each pillar plus three of your choice).
You will be expected to reflect on your activities and experiences and document theseas a final 'reflective log' which will be submitted via Moodle at the end of the programme.
Registration
How do I register for the Award?
Registration opens in October 2024 and prior to this you will receive a link via email with details on how to register. You will be asked to choose four or six activities depending on whether you opt to undertake the Graduate Skills Award or the Graduate Skills Award Plus. You must register for each activity separately and it is your responsibility to ensure you attend all activities you have signed up for. You can change your activity choice at any time.
What happens after I register?
You will be contacted by a member of the team who will confirm receipt of your registration and will provide you with further instructions on how to access the Moodle site. The Moodle site is the main e-learning hub for the programme and has all of the necessary information you will need to planning and execute your extra-curricular activities. To gain credit for the Award, you must complete a reflective log which is submitted through Moodle.
On Completion
On completion of the Award, you will receive a certificate and acknowledgment on your Higher Education Achievement Record (HEAR).

What our past students say
- The MVLS Graduate Skills Award has succeeded in equipping me with the soft skills and the hard skills for me to thrive as both a member of society and a scientist. But it has also inspired me to be better, and to make the change that I would like to see and experience. It has been a fantastic journey!
- The Graduate Skills Award provided me with countless valuable attributes and I will definitely encourage others to participate in it. Knowing that I was not only attaining professional and personal development, but also making a difference in the lives of others was priceless.
- I am glad to have been given the opportunity to supplement my academic learning and I am confident that I can carry forward a host of skills. This is an opportunity I may not have sought specifically outside of this award scheme.
