Repeat Year Policy

It is sometimes possible for a student with special circumstances to repeat a year of study in the College of Arts & Humanities.

All requests to repeat a year of study within the College of Arts & Humanities must be referred to the Advising and Wellbeing Team - COAH-Advising-Wellbeing@glasgow.ac.uk.

Please note that repeating a year is not guaranteed and that securing repeat year funding from your funding body does not equate to securing a repeat year at the University.

If you believe that your circumstances warrant this, please in the first instance, email COAH-Advising-Wellbeing@glasgow.ac.uk explaining the reasons for requesting a repeat year and providing documentation as appropriate.

Students wishing to apply for

a Repeat Year of study should complete the Repeat Year Request form on the UofG Helpdesk.

Repeat Year Request Due to Ill Health

If the reason for requesting a Repeat Year includes grounds of ill health, you should include in your application:

  • A clear and detailed account of the issues that prevented completion of the original planned year of study
  • Supporting evidence, as complete as possible, of how those issues have been addressed and resolved, what supports are in place to ensure the student is fit and ready to return and successfully re-engage with studies
  • This will normally include evidence from an appropriate medical professional.

Medical evidence should be dated no earlier than one month before the application deadline, to ensure that it is current and relevant at that time.

Repeat Year Request for Any Other Reason

Students who are seeking a repeat year for other reasons (personal circumstances that affected their studies, etc), should include in their application:

  • A clear and detailed account of the issues that prevented completion of the original planned year of study
  • A clear and detailed account on how thier circumstances now allow them to return successfully to study
  • Where relevant, provide any supporting evidence.

Maximum Duration of Study

Please note the relevant section from the University Regulations regarding the maximum period of study. The maximum period of study is calculated in consecutive years, from first registration for the degree.

Please note that if a repeat year is granted, the maximum period of study still applies.

The final date for Repeat Year Requests to be submitted is the 11 August2025. No further Repeat Year Requests will be accepted after this date.

All Repeat Year Requests are considered by the Progress Committee.
