The work of two UofG PhD students in English Literature has been recognised.

Dženana Vucic has been awarded one of The Marten Bequest Scholarships while Lauren Cooper has received a Special Commendation in the 2022 Contemporary Women’s Writing Essay Prize. Both students are based in the School of Critical Studies.

Dženana, a Bosnian-Australian writer, editor and critic is among this year’s seven recipients of the scholarship worth $50,000 Australian dollars each. Dženana, will undertake a book project post PhD and plans to use the scholarship toward study study and research in Bosnia and Australia.

The scholarships are administered by the Australia Council on behalf of Perpetual as Trustee and were established by John Chisholm Marten, a lifelong patron of the arts and literature, to develop the artistic practice of young artists through travel. They offer ‘talented young artists the chance to explore, study and develop their artistic gifts through travelling interstate and/or overseas’.

In other good news, Lauren, also a PhD student in English Literature, has had her essay selected for Special Commendation by the panel awarding of the 2022 Contemporary Women’s Writing Essay Prize, and has been invited to publish it with the journal.

The Contemporary Women’s Writing Essay Prize aims to encourage new scholarship in the field of contemporary women’s writing, recognise and reward outstanding achievement by new researchers and support the professional development of next generation scholars.
