Professor Murray Pittock was Melvyn Bragg's guest discussing the Highland Clearances
The University of Glasgow’s Professor Murray Pittock was one of the guests on Melvyn Bragg’s In Our Time on BBC Radio 4 on Thursday 8 March 2018.
Melvyn Bragg and his guests, who also included Professor Sir Tom Devine and Professor Marjory Harper, discussed the Highland Clearances.
The programme looked at how and why Highlanders and Islanders were cleared from their homes in waves in the 18th and 19th Century, following the break-up of the clans after the Battle of Culloden.
Some of the evictions were notorious, with the sudden and fatal burning of townships, to make way for sheep and deer farming.
For many, migration brought a new start elsewhere in Britain or in the British colonies. After more than a century of upheaval, the Clearances left an indelible mark on the people and landscape of the Highlands and Western Isles.
If you miss the live programme, it is available on BBC iPlayer.
