The University of Glasgow’s Arts and Humanities subjects have jumped eight places to 70th in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings which were released today, Wednesday 13 September 2017.

The University of Glasgow has risen to 70th in the latest Arts and Humanities ranking from 78th place last year.
The 2018 THE rankings’ arts and humanities table judge world class universities across all of their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

Professor Roibeard Ó Maolalaigh, Vice Principal and Head of the College of Arts at the University of Glasgow said: “Our new ranking – up eight places to #70 in the 2018 Times Higher Education Arts and Humanities subject ranking – is testimony to the dedication of colleagues within the College of Arts to world-class research and research-led teaching.

“The greatest asset of the College is our inspiring people, who are highly dedicated to their work.  Collaborating across disciplines within the University and with other world-class universities as well as government, industry, schools and cultural and heritage agencies, we aim for excellence in all that we do.

“We are also committed to providing excellent teaching, learning and research, to disseminating knowledge, developing critical evaluative skills and creating new, socially relevant understanding with a view to preparing our students for the competitive workplace and global challenges of today and tomorrow.

“We shall be moving in the near future to a new co-located College of Arts building as part of the University’s £1bn campus development programme which we believe will foster even  greater ambition and engagement and will act as a gateway to the West End of Glasgow’s cultural quarter.”

Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, said: “The news of the College of Arts’ move up the THE’s rankings for Arts and Humanities follows hot on the heels of the University’s success in THE’s Global University rankings – up from 88th to 80th – which was announced last week.

“This further success underlines the strength and quality of teaching at the University of Glasgow, as well as recognising the tremendous student experience that we offer. I am delighted that the College of Arts’ hard work and dedication has been recognised publicly by THE in this way.”

Arts and Humanities subjects covered in the rankings include History, Philosophy, Theology, Languages, Literature & Linguistics, Archaeology and Performing Arts.

The Arts and Humanities list of universities uses the same methodology as the THE’s World University Rankings, but with more weight given to teaching and research and less to citations, to reflect the discipline’s priorities.

The weightings for teaching and research in the Arts and Humanities table has altered slightly this year, while the minimum publication threshold for universities to be included has increased.

This year’s THE rankings has expanded to include 400 institutions, up from 100 last year.
