What are you studying?
I've just finished first year in Dentistry.
Why did you choose to study at the University of Glasgow?
My main reasons for choosing Glasgow were course related. As a dental student there are only a few universities in Scotland to choose from. The dental school in Glasgow is one of the best in the UK and the way the course is structured (with a chance to immediately be in contact with patients) really appealed to me. With regards to running Glasgow has great sports facilities dotted around the city and has developed a real culture of sport after the Commonwealth Games. There are so many places to train at and friendly groups meet all the time giving plenty of options for someone who has an established training schedule or for someone who has just started out.
What have been your biggest challenges during your time at Glasgow?
Accepting first year is a big change and learning curve. This was easier once I realised this is true for everyone. At BUCS indoor championships I admitted to several older members of the athletic club that I was worried about keeping up with training and if I’d be able to improve on times I had run in the past. Being reassured that everyone struggles at first but can keep going gave me a lot of comfort. I started running new personal bests immediately after this discussion.
What are your ambitions following graduation?
At the moment I’m toying with the idea of something to do with research as I’ve enjoyed the things I’ve learned in a fairly lecture heavy year, or with going into practice, hopefully somewhere around Glasgow. I’m still in first year so I’ve got another four years to play around with ideas. I’d love to keep competing as many of the women I race against also have careers in science or medicine so I know that this is possible.
What would you like to say to the alumni that have helped you?
Thank you. The support you give is a massive and has allowed me to keep doing something I love.
