Prof John Fraser has led the Critical Care Research Group (CCRG) to achieve a new world record for the greatest distance and longest amount of time a heart has remained ‘ex-vivo’ (outside a body) before successful transplantation.
Alumna Professor John Fraser achieves world record for organ transplantation, leading the Critical Care Research Group to achieve the greatest distance and longest amount of time a heart has remained 'ex-vivo' (outside the body) before successful transplantation.
In recent clinical trials the project achieved a cross-country heart transplant where the heart remained ex vivo for 8 hrs 47 mins – more than double the standard ‘allowable time’ of 4hrs.
The Living Heart Project also completed international heart transplants with organs travelling between Australia and New Zealand.
You can read more about the research on the CCRG website.
