Remembering Scotland's most senior Theologian.
We were sad to hear about the death of Rev Professor D. W. D. (Bill) Shaw OBE at the age of 92 on 14 July 2020.
Rev Prof Shaw was Scotland’s most senior theologian, close friend of the University’s Divinity department and was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity by the University in 1991.
Born in Edinburgh in 1928, Rev Prof Shaw gained degrees in divinity, modern languages and law. A practicing solicitor he decided to become a candidate for the ministry of the Church of Scotland. In 1963 Rev Prof Shaw was appointed to a Lectureship in the University of Edinburgh and later Dean of the Faculty if the Divinity and Principal of New College. From 1979 he also held with distinction the Chair of Divinity and Principal of St Mary’s College at the University of St Andrews.
Also awarded an honorary degree by the University of St Andrews in 2005 and recipient of an OBE in 2009 for his charitable work, Rev Prof Shaw’s publications were described as “elegant and understated” and are still read in the University’s department today.
