Research interests

Salmonella sp. causes a spectrum of diseases in humans and animals ranging from self-limiting enteritis to severe systemic infections. The most well studied salmonella serotype is Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium). The cell envelope of Gram negative bacteria such as S. Typhimurium directly interfaces with their host and many eucaryotic antimicrobial defences are targeted at the cell envelope. The cell envelope is protected and repaired by envelope stress responses (ESR).

At least ESR four stress response systems responding to have been identified in E. coli and S. Typhimurium (Nat Rev Micro 4, 383-394 2006)., the most well studied are those controlled by the alternative sigma factor, sigma factor E (sE ), and the two component regulator CpxA/CpxR (Cpx).

We have shown that both of these regulators, and genes controlled by them, are involved in S. Typhimurium pathogenesis and response to various stresses (Infect. Immun. 67, 1560-1568 1999; Microbiology 148, 113-122 2002; Infect. Immun. 71, 5386-5388 2003; Infect Immun 72, 7357-7359 2004; Infect Immun 73, 459-463 2005; Microbiology 153, 263-269 2007).

We are using a variety of methods, including microarrays and proteomics, to identify s E and Cpx regulated genes and study their role in salmonella pathogenesis and defence against various stresses.
