Research interests
My principal research interests are focussed on the molecular mechanisms that promote immortalisation and transformation of animal cells as well as the identification of novel targets for therapeutic cancer intervention. Of particular interest, is the role of Bovine Papillomaviruses (BPV) types 1 and 2 in the pathogenesis of equine sarcoid skin tumours. The disease is associated with BPV-1/2 infection and sarcoids represent the first known natural cross species papillomaviral infection.
Current projects are aimed at furthering the understanding of the viral pathogenesis of sarcoids by studying the mechanisms by which viral infection can induce cell transformation and cell invasion and interactions of virus with host cell defences. Further, we are attempting to understanding the infectious nature of the disease and the mechanisms of disease transmission. We are also actively engaged in evolutionary studies of the worldwide distribution of BPV variants in equids and bovids.
The lab is also evaluating RNA interference as a tool to silence viral gene expression as a potential therapeutic modality. In summary my group combines the disciplines of comparative biology, virology, molecular and cell biology to study virus host interactions and disease transmission of BPV in a non-natural host.
