The Global Mental Health Team organised a suicide prevention training session for Global Mental Health MSc students earlier this month.  The ‘Introduction to Suicide Prevention’ classroom session was held in Clarice Pears on Monday 8th of April 2024 and was attended by 14 students. The training was facilitated by Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH) and covered core suicide prevention topics including stigma, early warning signs, having the conversation, boundaries and limitations, statistics and signposting.   Feedback provided by those who completed the post-training evaluation questionnaire was very positive, with 100% (10/10) reporting that the training session was very or extremely useful. One student expanded ‘It’s great to learn about suicide and how to prevent it. I learnt how to identify warning signals of suicide and how to set boundaries in suicide prevention and taking care of one’s own mental health. Another student reported that ‘both trainers were really engaging and created a comfortable atmosphere to discuss and learn. I expected to feel a bit drained after such a heavy topic but because of them I finished feeling positive’.
