Biography

Dr Kathryn Lowe is a Senior Lecturer in Old and Middle English. Dr Lowe is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. She is a member of the International advisory board for the Dictionary of Old English project https://doe.artsci.utoronto.ca/, and a Council member for the Early English Text Society https://users.ox.ac.uk/~eets/index.html.

Dr Lowe’s teaching interests include Old and Middle English language and literature, Old Icelandic, history of the English language, and manuscript studies. She would be delighted to supervise suitably qualified postgraduate students in Old English language and literature, Middle English language, history of the English language, the history of scholarship, and manuscript studies.

Dr Lowe is currently completing a new edition of the Anglo-Saxon charters of Bury St Edmunds. This volume is to form part of the Anglo-Saxon Charters Series, a project published by Oxford University Press and sponsored jointly by the British Academy and Royal Historical Society. She is responsible for producing the editions and translations of the charters themselves together with related discussion on language, the archive and its textual transmission. Prof. Sarah Foot (Oxford) is writing the historical analysis and commentary to the edition.

Dr Lowe is author of many articles on Old and Middle English language and literature, with a focus on the transition from Old to Middle English. Her principal research interests are in Old English language, textual transmission, charter studies, the history of literacy and the history of scholarship.

Dr Lowe was Director of the Glasgow Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies 1998-2010. She has served on on the Council of the Viking Society for Northern Research and the Advisory Board of the International Society of Anglo-Saxonists (now International Society for the Study of Early Medieval England). She was consultant on documentary materials to the Linguistic Atlas of Early Middle English (principal author Margaret Laing), and Section Editor for Medieval Literature of the Routledge Annotated Bibliography of English Studies.

Dr Lowe was PI on “Manuscripts of Ælfric's Catholic Homilies”, part of the project cluster “Making Medieval English Manuscript: New Knowledge, New Technologies” funded by the Andrew W. Mellon foundation (Scholarly Communication and Information Technology Program), 2011-13.
